Early Works

In the beginning my work was very abstract. Strong influences were Cy Twombly and Susan Rothenburg.

Salem, MA__1989-1992

.While living in Salem I had a large dining room area for my studio so some of my work became larger and I experimented a little more with panel painting. I was reading and studying a lot of Celtic traditions so that does come into my work.

Gloucester, MA__1995-1997

I lived in Gloucester for only 2 years but I knew it was my spiritual home. Early at dawn when awake I could hear the sounds of the Universe. So many artists took refuge here. This piece called Rocks and Water was deeply inspired by Milton Avery. I continued to do works that came out of the Abstract Expressionists education I received but now I was looking at the movements of the sea.

Beverly, MA__1997-2003

Beverly was the next best thing to Gloucester and I could commute into Boston for work. I also had my own apartment for the first time and I began a spiritual quest into cross cultural imagery. Nature still played a big role; water plants and mountains. The lotus became a reoccurring image. I did a lot of work here until 2001 when I lost my job and my apartment and was forced to move. Everything went into storage until my new home and a huge studio was found in Providence RI

Providence Studio__2003-2007

Lots was happening in this big studio space in my new home. I was deeply moved and angered by the war in Iraq so this did come into my visual vocabulary. I have been inspired in my career as an artist by Picasso’s Guernica and it will play out through my body of work. My child hood love of horses became a symbol for the abuses of war.

Beverly, MA_1992-1995

I was supporting myself while working towards a MA in Theatre Technology so not a lot of time for painting but I did have a few projects developing. One had to do with men who wore skirts. I thought it was cool that men used to wear skirts and some of the imagery was coming from Egyptian cultures. Something from my past that always stayed with me.

194 Broadway__my bedroom studio.

So here I am, still in Providence. Working mostly in Theatre and Museum Design and painting when ever I could. As I put together my archives and looked at my body of work through the years I began to realize that I have been working with imagery which came from a tradition of depicting the Garden of Paradise. Mountains, oceans, water plants, the lotus and horses. This has become a central guide for me now as I delve into the forces of good and evil in The Garden of Paradise.
